Part-time position

Shop Associate & Permanent Jewelry Technician

Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays
$15–17/hr, depending on experience

If you can’t walk past a well-made thing without picking it up, this might be your job.

If your evenings go to beading, sewing, sketching or tinkering, and your friends keep asking you to fix their necklaces, this might be your job.

If you like a good conversation with a stranger, and you can help someone choose between two chains without rushing them, this might be your job.

As our Shop Associate & Permanent Jewelry Technician, you’ll spend your days surrounded by handcrafted jewelry and leather goods. You’ll work with your hands at the welding station and in the studio, and you’ll help people find, and sometimes wear home, a piece that means something to them.

New to permanent jewelry? We’ll train you. Already experienced? Even better. Come show us what you know.

What you’ll do

  • Run the shop for the day: open and close, run the register, and keep things tidy and stocked
  • Welcome customers, chat, and help them find the right piece, whether it’s a gift or something for themselves
  • Weld permanent jewelry: bracelets, anklets, hand chains and rings
  • Help in the studio with production: assembly, finishing and packing orders
  • Snap a few photos or short clips of shop and studio life for our social channels

You might be a fit if you

  • Are good with your hands. Beading, sewing, metalwork, embroidery, anything small and fiddly. Dexterity matters here.
  • Are warm and easy to talk to, and comfortable starting a conversation with someone you’ve just met
  • Notice details, like a clasp that’s slightly off or a display that needs straightening
  • Care about how things are made and who makes them
  • Are dependable, especially on weekends

Schedule

  • Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays during shop hours
  • Occasional additional hours for in-store events

Pay and perks

  • $15–17/hr, depending on experience and skill level
  • Paid time off
  • Employee discount

About us

Son of a Sailor is a jewelry and leather goods studio and shop in Dignowity Hill, run by Jessica and Billy since 2011. We handcraft jewelry, leather goods and barware in the studio, and stock the shop with those alongside pieces from other makers we admire. We’re a small team, so everyone’s work shows up in the shop, and we host workshops, pop-ups and maker’s markets that keep the neighborhood stopping by!

To apply

Email jessica@sonofasailor.mom (not dot com!) with a short note, your resume, and a photo or two of something you’ve made (it doesn’t have to be jewelry.)
